Common Tern Catching a Fish

This was a magical morning in the Bear River Wildlife Refuge. When I got to this small pond that was only there because of a high spring runoff, I was greeted by a plethora of beautiful birds. There were Lesser and Great Egrets, Ibis, Avocets, Black-Necked Stilts and the Common Terns were putting on an aerial show better than any human air show. It would fly around til it spotted a minnow in the water and then it would hover about 20 feet up and at the exact right split second, would dive bomb into the water, go under a bit and come back up, usually triumphant with a small minnow in its mouth. This shot is even better because I did not use a fast shutter speed that would have frozen all the movement, instead it caught the body of the tern in focus because at that split second only its wings were moving–what a nice effect!
