When an American Kestrel is protecting its nest or its babies, or is getting ready to dive and catch its next meal, it hovers in place, which makes it much easier to get a shot like this. This particular one had a fledgling nearby that I also got some great shots of. This one was at the Farmington Bird Refuge in Utah and if you look close, is banded.
